Remedial Massage

Remedial massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or light.  I endeavour to identify the original biomechanical dysfunction, thus healing the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms. Remedial massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints.

I make my own oils and medicating balms to use in my treatments as a lubricating medium, using only cold pressed vegetable oils. This ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder are deeply penetrated. You will benefit by the take-home stretches I can recommend specifically for your problem areas.

Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with remedial massage include muscle tightness and pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, whiplash, neck and back pain, scoliosis, headaches and sports injuries.

Key benefits of remedial massage include:
  • stimulation of the blood supply which allows toxins in the muscles to be moved through
  • the calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort
  • the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility.
  • improvement to the health of the cells and the repairing of tissues
  • easing  of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.

I have also trained in other therapies that can support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. Those therapies include Sports Massage, Lymphatic Drainage Technique, Hydrotherapy for Massage Therapists, Poulticing, Foot Reflexology, and Aromatherapy. It is essential during all massage sessions that all clients wear underpants.

Swedish Massage

The Swedish Movement Treatment was derived from Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Chinese techniques. The probable beginnings of massage can be traced through Chinese literature to around 3,000 BC. Our modern massage however, was systemized by Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) a Swedish fencing master and gymnastics instructor. Today, the modality incorporating the Ling techniques is called Swedish massage.

Sweden was the first country to include massage in a college curriculum supervised at government level. Courses required in-depth scientific studies and incorporated the unique hands-on techniques of effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. Hydrotherapy, acupressure and trigger point therapy are also extensively used in remedial therapy treatments today.

The Swedish massage courses offered by the Queensland Swedish Massage Institute (QSMI) where I trained in the mid 1990's have been closely derived from the work of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943) as presented in his book, The Art of Massage.

While traveling in Sweden, Dr John Harvey Kellogg, already a renowned surgeon who employed heat, vibration and aerobic type exercise to enhance blood flow which greatly assists post-operative recovery, was inspired by the use made of massage in Swedish hospitals. He was a prolific writer, but it was his publishing of The Art of Massage that has provided the greatest influence and inspiration for the practice of Swedish massage as a remedial therapy to date. The techniques and processes in his book were soundly based on anatomy and physiology. I believe that Swedish massage is the most common form of massage being used in Australia today. Its professional application is successful in promoting soft tissue healing, enhancing sports performance and fatigue recovery, and can also be highly effective in treating stress-related problems.

My muse and mentor is the Mother-of-Massage on the Sunshine Coast, Margaret Wright. Margaret is one of the co-founders of the Queensland Swedish Massage Institute. Margaret is still active in her interests in Natural Health and although now well into her 80's, still enjoys the benefits of weekly massages.

In acknowledging Margaret's teachings, integrity and influence, Ingrid says, "I thank Margaret Wright for generously giving herself and sharing her knowledge in the art of Massage, Hydrotherapy for Massage Therapists, and poulticing. I use all these techniques in my practice, to great effect."
